Thomas Kilian III is a master craftsman and ceramic scholar dedicated to revitalizing historical pottery traditions through a contemporary lens. With over two decades of studio experience—more than half of which has been dedicated to 17th- and 18th-century reproduction and revival ware—Kilian’s work explores the non-linear nature of history. By "remixing" traditional forms, he creates a tangible bridge between early craftsmanship and modern material culture. Deeply engaged in experimental archaeology, Kilian utilizes historical data and artifact analysis to recover lost techniques from both the Staffordshire factories of England and early, undocumented American workshops. His mastery spans earthenware, salt-glazed stoneware, and porcelain. Committed to total material authenticity, Kilian frequently sources and processes his own wild clays and compounds his own custom glazes in the studio. His deeply researched work has earned a dedicated following among collectors, living history venues, and enthusiasts of early American ceramic heritage.
